This site is a work-in-progress, as time permits. We have historically avoided the use of cookies, generally preferring server-side techniques to do what folks often use cookies for. For the current moment, this site is somewhat broken, while we reconsider how to balance accessibility, persistence, functionality, and state-tracking. We’ll remove this note when we think it is fixed.

Unbelievable. First it was Twitter, shutting our account down without any reasonable explanation or warning. Then Facebook (or “Meta”, or whatever they wish to be called these days) acted similarly. Our page sat there for at least a decade (since 2012: https://www.facebook.com/systems.architect), not bothering anyone, and not violating any policy that I could learn of. Apparently, Facebook has done this to other small business owners too. If you were affected, we would love to hear from you. If your business was affected, we would love to hear your experiences. Maybe we can even help.

I guess they found it to too hard to offer us some kind of courtesy notice first, maybe with some brief explanation of whatever policy they beleived we may have been violating.

Since about September 2017, I have discontinued all use of WhatsApp. If you’ve known me for some time, you know I have a passionate loathing for certain social media platforms. Recent public breaches of trust only confirmed the messages I have shared privately for more than 15 years: steer clear.

I have nothing against IM, SMS, presence, and chatting. In fact, before there were consumer IP-aware GSM phones, Claire and I carried on some long-distance chats via Telnet running on Unix servers, while dating.
