WelcomeLegal ▸ Working for the City of Richmond, VA

I am quite sure that I will someday publish a book inspired by my world-view changing experiences working for the City of Richmond. Of course, my audience will be technology experts.

I've entertained this idea (of sharing my experiences) for some years now. My desire became strongest after spending time at the Richmond's central Department of Information Technology, working as the city's Infrastructure Architect. It is common knowledge that I don't work there anymore. Something happened.

Anyway, here I now share some of my new experiences; specifically, events after January 22, 2018.

In the same way that a fire-rescue department acts with an overall mission to rescue life and property, it is my goal here to help other technology practitioners to avoid (or navigate) certain career pitfalls and mistakes that one might encounter when working for a local government such as Richmond.

Incidentally, there are some skilled technology practitioners hiding within with "walls" of the Department of Fire and Emergency Services. My hat is off to them because many of them are self-taught. As firefighters, they have had a special struggle because the firefighter's culture and challenges are so unique, and IMO very largely misunderstood. So sharing my journey might turn out to be my small way of "giving back" to my former fire-service community.

At any rate, it is my sincere hope that someone, somewhere, finds something helpful in my stories of adventure as they unravel at the City of Richmond, VA.

Today marks five (5) years since I began working for the City of Richmond.

When I mentioned it to a local HR professional, she said “Oh, you want to get your pin?”. So apparently, I’m supposed to get a pin. I wasn’t aware of that (maybe they mentioned it in my supervisory leadership class, but I missed that).

Whenever I get it, I’ll post a picture.
